Lying lips are abomination to the LORD.

Proverbs 12:22 tells us "Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD." We run across the word "abomination" quite a bit in the Word of God. But what does it really mean? The first time the word is used in the Bible is Genesis 43:32, where it tells us about the Hebrews and the Egyptians being served their meals separately, "because the Egyptians don't eat with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians."

The word that is translated in our Bible as "abomination" is the Hebrew word "toebah." It is defined as something that causes disgust or hatred. Our headline states - "Lying lips are abomination to the LORD." Since an abomination is something that causes disgust and hatred, lying lips disgust God and arouses His hatred. Then we have - "A righteous man hates lies" (Proverbs 13:5). Why does a righteous person hate lies? The righteous person hate lies because God hates lies, and the righteous hate whatever God hates. The righteous man or woman loves whatever God loves, and hates whatever God hates. Isn't that what it means to be righteous?

So, when we see the word "abomination" in Scripture, that's a definite red flag. "Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD." Evangelist Dr. John R. Rice would say one statement of the Bible should be enough for a Christian. I agree, but what if God wrote in another place in the same book, "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor." This is one of the Big Ten straight from Exodus 20! And add to that, "Therefore putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor" (Ephesians 4:25). One clear statement in the Bible should be enough. Two and three clear statements should leave no doubt! Our God hates lies, and consequently, righteous men and women should also hate lies.

But why are lies such an evil force in the world? Because lies and death are running buddies! Jesus called Satan the father of lies and a murderer. Isn't it interesting that He put those two sins together as He describes Satan. Lies and death. The evil one plots to destroy America via lies and half-truths and all forms of deception. Our national motto is "In God We Trust." But the wicked prince wants us to trust in his lies. Entire nations have fallen, thousands of people have perished, because her citizens trusted in lies.

Herr Hitler proclaimed to the Germans that they were a superior race of people, and that "might makes right." He promised the German nation if they trusted in him, he would subdue the lower races of people, and usher in a kingdom that would last 1,000 years. Japan also embraced the tall tale that they were a superior race blessed with a divine leader. It was the lies of racial supremacy, and eugenics, and Darwinism that fostered the hyper-nationalism which steered the eager masses into World War I and II.

But how did the lies work our for Germany and Japan by the fall of 1945? We say the Allies won the war, but on another level, Satan won. He brought death and destruction to between 105 and 115 million people. These were the deadliest military conflicts in the long history of human warfare, and they were fueled by lies. So you see, lies and death walk together hand in hand. Nations are blessed when her citizens trust in God. However, even recent history shows us LIES serve as a faulty foundation for any country.

"Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet guided by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires. So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest! And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna [hell] ... It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men who are made in the image of God. Out of the same mouth comes blessing and cursing. My brothers [and sisters], these things ought not to be so." ~ James 3:4-6, 8-10.

"You who love Yahweh, hate evil" (Psalm 97:10). "Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD." Therefore, "A righteous man hates lies." As we follow hard after the LORD, we are called to love what He loves, and hate what He hates.
